Historic Preservation Enforcement
Unlawful or incompatible construction can damage historic properties and degrade their value as community assets. The building permit process is designed to prevent this by ensuring that proposed work is reviewed for appropriateness before construction begins. The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) conducts property inspections and takes enforcement to ensure compliance with approved building permits, building codes, and the standards established by the DC Historic Preservation Review Board under the historic preservation law. Violating the DC preservation law may be cause for enforcement action including fines and penalties.
